Falls represent the most frequent and serious type of accident in people aged 65 and over, with 10,000 falls happening each day. Falls often have both a physical and mental impact, as they can result in lack of confidence, isolation, fractures, and broken bones.
Evidence shows that effective fall prevention significantly reduces fall rates. With a range of bed rails for adults and other fall prevention products to choose from, and with the option of a crash mat too, you can lessen the risk of falls by residents taking place in your care home.
Are Side Rails Required?
Poorly fitted bed rails have been known to cause asphyxiation where a resident's neck, chest, or limbs have become trapped in gaps between the bed rails, or between the bed rail and the bed, headboard, or mattress. Most profiling beds have the siderails built-in but can present other risks, including rolling over the top of the rail, climbing over the rail or footboard, violently shaking and dislodging the rails, and forceful contact with bed rail parts. Before you go through the process of carrying out a risk assessment, are side rails necessary or would mesh panels suffice?
